NEHI: Wait Out The November Call Cycle Before Buying

Summary NEOS Ethereum High Income ETF offers high-yield, actively managed exposure to Ethereum via a synthetic covered call options strategy. NEHI's monthly distribution yield of 28.90% appeals to income-oriented investors with high-risk tolerance and a long-term horizon. The current covered call structure exposes NEHI to potential NAV drag if Ethereum appreciates sharply before November 20, 2026. I assign NEHI a Hold rating due to near-term headwinds, thin liquidity, and significant NAV erosion risks from options trading. The NEOS Ethereum High Income ETF ( NEHI ) is an actively managed exchange-traded fund designed to provide active exposure to an options trading strategy on Ethereum exchange-traded products. By providing indirect exposure to Ethereum, NEHI can be utilized as an alternative asset for gaining exposure to the cryptocurrency rather than investing in a spot ETF or directly into Ethereum. With a monthly distribution yield of approximately 28.90% over the last twelve months, NEHI can be best applied by income-oriented investors seeking a high return of capital. Given the volatile nature of cryptocurrencies, NEHI will be most appropriate for investors with a relatively high-risk tolerance and a long investment horizon. Given these risks, I assign NEHI a "Hold" rating. TradingView Investment Thesis for NEHI NEHI was designed to maximize income by employing an options trading strategy that earns yield by two factors: purchasing calls to gain upside exposure and selling calls and puts to earn income. NEHI trades options against the iShares Ethereum Trust ETF ( ETHA ) and also holds a 19% position in ETHA. As of October 5, 2026, NEHI effectively has a synthetic covered call strategy deployed, owning long-term exposure to the performance of Ethereum through long-dated call options while earning premium income by shorting Ethereum through the sale of short-dated call options. The fund also gains additional premium through the sale of January 2027 put options, which effectively act as an indirect long position in Ethereum without earning upside potential beyond the premium paid by the counterparty. Given the positioning of the fund, I believe the portfolio management team is bullish on Ethereum, expecting the cryptocurrency to appreciate in price going into 2027. Corporate Filings Ethereum is exhibiting bullish technicals with the possibility of going through a new growth cycle. With two positive growth waves following the price decline that began in October 2026, Ethereum may be at the beginning of a major recovery, positioning NEHI for positive growth going forward. From a tactical trading perspective, I believe Ethereum trades to $3,380 before undergoing another retracement cycle. TradingView This can be substantially beneficial to NEHI given the long call position within the strategy. If Ethereum trades at this level, I believe the underlying ETF, ETHA, will trade to $24/share. While this can be beneficial to the long-call and short-put options positions in the ETF, positive momentum may deliver some headwinds as part of the fund’s covered call strategy. As of October 5, 2026, the ETF has two covered call positions expiring on November 20, 2026, at strike prices of $22/share and $24/share. If ETHA were to reach my technical price target of $24/share, the $22/share strike price may be executed, potentially losing NEHI $2/share on the short call options positions, while the $24/share call options may expire worthless or at a low delta from the strike price. Without a call spread, which would be the action of purchasing call options at a higher price on the same day of expiration as the covered call options, NEHI may be at risk of losing value from this trade. This could create some drag on NAV, negatively impacting shareholder value. Given this risk, I assign NEHI a Hold rating for the time being. TradingView While the fund may face some near-term headwinds if the covered call positions were to result in a loss, I believe NEHI can be a practical approach to gaining cryptocurrency exposure, as the strategy will provide active management that can perform beyond the performance of Ethereum. Given the significant volatility of the cryptocurrency market, investing in an actively managed portfolio may be an ideal solution for those seeking exposure without the required monitoring of the asset. As for investor suitability, NEHI may be most appropriate for risk-taking income investors. Like peer buy-write strategies, NEHI can be a practical solution to portfolio management given the high return of capital within the distribution. Rather than selling and rebalancing a portfolio, investors can strategically allocate to buy-write strategies to gain indirect exposure to their asset of choice and take the ROC as distributable income. Given the risky nature of Ethereum, investors may apply BlackRock, Inc.'s (BLK) guidance for a Bitcoin allocation of 1-2%. About NEOS Ethereum High Income ETF NEHI was launched by NEOS Investments on December 2, 2025, on the Cboe Exchange. NEHI has an expense ratio of 98 bps, aligned with peer enhanced income strategies offered on the market. Seeking Alpha NEHI exhibits relatively thin liquidity with approximately $117 mm in net assets with an average of $1.95 mm in share value changing hands on a daily basis. NEHI has a wide 30-day average bid/ask spread of 0.22%, adding a sizable cost to round-trip ownership. Given these factors, NEHI may be most suitable as a long-term investment strategy rather than for short-term, active exposure. NEHI employs a synthetic covered call strategy to gain exposure to Ethereum along with holding ETHA shares for indirect exposure to the spot rate of Ethereum. A synthetic covered call strategy is made up of both long and short exposure to the same asset, buying call options in-the-money and selling covered calls at a higher strike price. The long call positions will gain NEHI with exposure to the performance of Ethereum, while the covered call options will earn the ETF premium income. Assuming the covered call positions expire worthless, NEHI will roll forward these positions to maintain short exposure to Ethereum, earning a profit that equates to the difference between repurchasing and selling the covered call options. If the strike price of Ethereum were to exceed the strike price of the covered calls, NEHI would roll forward the covered calls at a loss. Given the volatile nature of Ethereum, NEHI may earn extra premium income, though it may risk greater losses during short-term price appreciation. By comparison, NEHI can outperform ETHA during periods of market decline given the covered call strategy. While NEHI’s long exposure to Ethereum will perform in line with ETHA, the covered call positions will earn a premium no matter the direction of the market. This can potentially cushion losses during a declining market cycle for Ethereum. TradingView Additional Risks to Consider NEHI will expose investors to significant NAV erosion resulting from options trading costs and return of capital. Ethereum’s volatile nature may significantly influence the performance of NEHI and may not be appropriate for risk-averse investors. NEHI solely provides indirect exposure to Ethereum and should not be considered a complete portfolio solution. NEHI can be best applied as an alternative asset with a 1-2% allocation by those seeking exposure to the ETF. Thin liquidity may make exiting a position expensive, particularly during a market correction. Final Thoughts With Ethereum undergoing a new upcycle following the October 2025 decline, NEHI can be an appealing and practical investment strategy for income-oriented investors seeking exposure to Ethereum. Given that the fund may face some near-term headwinds resulting from the price appreciation of Ethereum, investors may want to wait out the current covered call cycle that expires on November 20, 2026. Given this risk, I assign NEHI a "Hold" rating.
